About the Citizen of the Year Award
Established in 1970, the Citizen of the Year Award honors outstanding voluntary service in health, education, and welfare in the Port Washington community. The first recipient was Harold E. Mertz.
Since then, 49 awards have been presented to residents and organizations who embody the spirit of service. The ceremony is held annually at the Port Washington Public Library and is open to the entire community.
A Legacy of Service Since 1911
Rooted in Port Washington
The Alper family’s story in Port Washington began in 1911, when Sam and Mary Alper opened a jewelry and watch repair store in the heart of town. The business was later passed to David and Fay Alper, carrying forward not only a storefront, but a deep sense of responsibility to the community. Rooted in David Alper’s WWII vow to “build up” his hometown, the family’s work has always reflected a commitment to strengthening Port Washington from within.
Today, Alper’s Hardware remains a central fixture on Main Street — a symbol of continuity, resilience, and pride in local business.
Four Generations Strong
Now spanning four generations, the Alper family legacy includes Doris Alper Novick and Mark Novick; Sheryl Alper Cohen and Lew Cohen; Marvin and Daryl Alper; Adam Alper and his wife Hayley; and Rachel and her husband Brian Fogel.
In 2011, in recognition of their 100th anniversary, the corner of Irma Avenue and Main Street was officially named “Alper’s Corner” by the Town of North Hempstead — a tribute to a family whose name has become synonymous with Port Washington itself.
A Tradition of Giving Back
The Alper family’s impact extends far beyond their business.
Doris, a Schreiber alumna, served as a teacher and director at the preschool at Temple Beth Israel and was instrumental in founding the Port Washington Children’s Center, serving on its Board for more than a decade. Mark served as president of the Port Washington Lions Club and as a board member of the Port Washington Counseling Center. Together, they have dedicated countless hours to supporting Landmark on Main Street, the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce, and Schreiber High School Senior Gambols.
Continuing the Legacy Today
Today, Adam and Brian proudly carry forward and expand the Alper tradition of community support.
Their annual charity event, Alper’s Karmacue, has become a beloved local tradition and an important fundraiser for the Community Chest. The “Little Free Library” in front of Alper’s Paint Annex serves not only as a free book exchange, but also as a community recycling point for paint and batteries. They have also partnered with Plant A Row for the Hungry, making Alper’s a collection site for fresh produce that supports local food pantries.
Port Washington thrives because of residents who invest in the greater good and uphold the spirit of community. For generations, the Alper family has been a steadfast presence and a cornerstone of our town.
